reflections on the essence of art:one must recognize and consider each sincere and immediate manifestation of a man’s soul in a work of art;…God reveals Himself equally in a tiny blade of grass and in the multiplicity of worlds,as in man’s soul;the essence of art reveals itself in both a poem and a role well-performed by an actor;a florist’s beautiful rose,a well- worn dress might have more significance in art than many a painting or sculpture:a tasteful arrangement of trees in a garden is often more worthwhile than grand mansions made out of stone.nor is it possible to count the forms in which art manifests itself:so many and so various are they that every man is,in a certain manner,an artist,…one need only educate and elevate his soul.a great man does a great work,a small man and his works are tiny,as creativity is not man’s lot….man’s part is to put his soul into a word,a stone, tones. …as the antithesis of true art, expressed through a style that is the individuality of the soul, one might place false, insincere art, exspressed through a pose,a technique, art(which is only) learnt. …style is sincerity,a soul’s natural voice, its shape, its language;a pose is the mockery of style,it is a parrot’s voice and language,a crippled shape”Adam Chmielowski

reading this at the moment. incredible novel. a dark, blood drenched western about the titular brothers fortunes, or rather misfortunes. the phrase ‘from bad to worse’ is quite apt. jesus, it’s a twisted thing alright. such desolation and despair handled with almost tenderness by the author whose beautiful phrases turn like ballerinas while all around is laid to waste. i have literally punched the air after some of the sentences they are so triumphantly rendered. an extraordinary writer. when they make the movie, as they no doubt will, it will be hard to watch as it will be removed from the sugar tipped words on the page and all that will be left will be the naked brutality. although the dialogue is so sharp and funny that the screenplay almost writes itself. not to mention Eli Sisters being one of the most complex, intelligent and fascinating characters in modern literature.

what with me watching the entire third season of Justified in the last two days into the bargain i seem to be surrounded by southern drawls, cowboy hats and the whip smart wise cracks of genial yet psychopathic gunslingers.

peace, i guess, though there is little to be found in my viewing and reading. in the real world, though, i still and always hope for peace.gL

thank you gary, you are my joy.elizabeth
